Meet Our New Pinhead

By RodneyHatfieldJr for Movies

With the pandemic looking like we have finally got a handle on it, news has finally started to flow like it did pre-covid. And this is huge news.

Jamie Clayton (The L Word) is reported to be starring as Pinhead in the upcoming 2022 reboot. The film just recently wrapped up production in Serbia. Gossip of a gender-swapped Pinhead has been circulating online for quite some time now.

Other cast members include Goran Visnjic (The Boys), Brandon Flynn (13 Reasons Why), Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), Hiam Abbass (Succession), Adam Faison (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay), and Aoife Hinds (Normal People). And just to add spice to the mix, Clive Barker is returning to the producer seat.

The original classic phantasmagoria was based on Barker’s novella The Hellbound Heart. Both the novella and the original film revolved around nightmarish begins from a different world, named Cenobites, who are summoned to our dimension by a mysterious puzzle box. The original Hellraiser film series featured horror icon Doug Bradley as the head Cenobite aka Pinhead. No word yet if he will be making a cameo in the new film

However with this news, as expected, there is fighting over the new gender. I have three reasons why this should not be such a big deal. First, let me tell you a story. Back in 1986 when news of the original Hellraiser movie was reported I disagreed because they cast a man(but I was happy after watching Bradley) as Hell priest. You see in the original novella The Hellbound Heart, Clive Barker’s story, the head Hell Priest was never described as explicitly male but an unknown gender with a feminine, melodic voice. We fans assumed Pinhead was the Queen of Hell when the original movie was announced. Second, we have had a female Pinhead in different comics over the years. And third and most important, Clive Barker wants a female Pinhead, and it is his creation. We have no right to tell a creator what to do with their creations. So we will be getting a new female Pinhead.

Now if you want to point out it is a remake and will void the original, then I am with you.  The original and pt 2 are solid classics. Why not have a new pinhead take over from Bradley. just CGI it like most movies are doing now.  I would love and support that over a complete relaunch. Oh well, Clive will do what he thinks is best.
