Pennywise: The Story of IT

Get ready your paper boats out and be ready to float, because this summer IT (1990) returns. And IT’s really hungry. Yes, the visuals and story were more in line with the book, but dang-it you can’t beat Tim Curry. He is an iconic actor in horror and fantasy for people of my age group. And with that in mind, a documentary is a great idea.

A brand new horror documentary Pennywise: The Story of IT, an in-depth look at the 1990 mini-series based on Stephen King’s novel, is headed to select theaters, VOD, and Screambox next month. Pennywise: The Story of IT will open in select theaters beginning July 8 before releasing on VOD and Screambox on July 26.

A short thirty-two years after its release, the popular two-part miniseries IT and its infamous killer clown continue to haunt the dreams of horror fans everywhere. Titled: Pennywise: The Story of IT. Created by John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) and Christopher Griffiths (Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser), catch the IT saga created when it was released but also the lasting impact it has had on an entire generation and the horror genre at large.

This film features exclusive interviews with many of the cult classic’s key players, from cast members Richard Thomas, Seth Green, and Tim Curry; the notorious monster clown Pennywise. Also director Tommy Lee Wallace and special effects makeup artist Bart Mixon.

The shining spot for me in this documentary is a large amount of archival footage and never-before-seen content. Of course, listening to the commentary and interviews will be fun and informative however the real gem is the unreleased material.

In addition to releasing on VOD platforms such as InDemand, DirecTV, DISH, Apple, Amazon Prime Video, Google, Vudu, and Xbox, the documentary will debut on Cinedigm’s horror streaming channel Screambox on July 26.
